PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS

I AM ASSUMING YOUR MODEM MANUAL IS SIMILAR TO THE ABOVE.
MY COMMENTS ETC. WERE TESTED USING 'TELIX V3.12' AND 'TELEMATE V2.10'
ON A SOUPED UP IBM XT WITH A NEC V20 CHIP, A 8MHZ SECONDARY CLOCK, AND
A MATH CO-PROCESSOR. THEY WERE ALSO TESTED ON AN ALR 386/33 MACHINE
OPERATING AT LANDMARK SPEEDS OF 51 mhz and 134 mhz (math coprocessor).
THE RESULTS SHOULD BE SIMILAR ON OTHER COMPUTERS AND WITH OTHER
COMMUNICATION PROGRAMS.
THE REASON FOR THIS DOCUMENT IS THAT I HAVE DOWN-LOADED VARIOUS
'HST' SET-UP FILES, ETC. FROM ASSORTED BBS'S AND HAVE FOUND THAT
WHILE THEY ALL SAY THEY ARE DOING THE SAME THING, THEY SURE GO ABOUT
IT IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. IN ALL THE DOWN-LOADS I HAVE FOUND MANY
ITEMS WHICH WERE UNCLEAR AND SEEMED TO BE CONTRADICTORY FROM ONE
EXPLANATION TO ANOTHER. THUS, I HAVE MADE MY OWN AND TRIED TO GIVE
REASONS, EXPLANATIONS, AND REFERENCES FOR EACH OF MY ACTIONS. IN
SO DOING I HAVE GONE THROUGH THE HST MANUAL AND VARIOUS PUBLICATIONS
IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND (?) AND BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHAT I HAVE DONE.
ANOTHER REASON FOR DOING IT THIS WAY IS TO ENABLE ME TO EXPLAIN IT
TO MY COMPUTER STUDENTS ( HA - THERE WAS ANOTHER MOTIVE AFTER ALL ).

PACKAGES ( TELIX V3.12 and TELEMATE V2.10). IN BOTH CASES I ASSUME
THERE IS no CONFIGURATION FILE PRESENT. IF THERE IS JUST DELETE IT AS
WE WANT TO START FROM SCRATCH.

BE SURE TO SAVE THE NEW SET-UP.
N O T E: When entering phone numbers into the telephone directory
======= I found that using 38400 caused a lot of CRC errors and
resulted in very POOR speeds. Using 19200 as the speed in
the individual phone directory lines (program and modem
still are set at 38400) cured the problem quite nicely, and
still enabled me to achieve the desired high transfer rates.
